I think your nvram is fubar. Or at least part of it somehow got overwritten.
You could first set up below options to what I have written (they are either defaults or my setup that works).
But if everything's still the same, you could also try to flash someone's nvram backup. And a stock rom afterall.

9a. Set preferred network type: GSM auto (PRL)
9b. Turn on radio: tap on the button
13. Set preferred network type: GSM/WCDMA (auto)
34. NONE: tap on the button

Which do you have? 850 or 900? I can upload full nvram.bin and .tar if you have 850.

Under battery there is a sticker. There is 850/2100 or 900/2100 written on it. :-)
