Google Maps / Other GPS apps
#1
Hello,

I'm running stock Android 5.1.1 on my phone.

Google Maps runs fine as long as it isn't updated. Once updated, when the screen gets shut off, Google Maps shuts off. I have added Google Maps as a "Protected" app that should allow it to continue to run in the background once the screen is off, but this doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

In addition to Google Maps, the same issue occurs with Mapquest, and here "Here" navigation apps.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their D6000? Or if not, if anybody has any ideas to get the GPS to properly function when I turn my screen off to get audio turn by turn navigation.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.

I will try to test this with mine. I'm pretty sure Google Play Services isn't needed for Maps, but it might be worth setting that as protected just to test. Which ROM version are you on?

Thank you for any help you can offer. I'm not operating any ROM (as far as I know) - it's just the stock version of Android that came on the phone.

Is there a ROM that is recommended?

Thanks again!

All phones have ROM.

1. Try making Google Services and any other Google protected. See if that fixes it.

2. Look in settings - about phone and let us know which version ROM you are on

Hello,

1.) I made EVERYTHING protected and it didn't work.

2.) I apologize, but there is no specific ROM description, the build number is V2.3_abroad.

Thanks!

Okay. That means you are on version 2.3, which means you are on the latest multi-language ROM. You can try updating to v2.7, but there is some hassle involved. Not difficult, but if you're not technically inclined, might be somewhat overwhelming. You would need to install custom recovery TWRP so you could flash gapps on there to have Play Store. Also, the only languages it will have is CN and EN.

I don't know of another solution to suggest. Maybe someone else can chime in on their experience with navigation.

I'm posting an update here for anyone else that has had this problem.

My Innos came with Maps 9.9.0 installed, and this version worked fine, and continued to work fine (I had to use it by uninstalling all updates), but updates to the maps app did not function. I would close the screen to save battery and just use voice directions and the navigation app would shut itself off, which is the opposite of helpful when you're driving on busy streets and shouldn't be looking at the phone.

GottaGetX recommended protecting all Google apps, which I did, and it didn't do anything. However, today, after I updated to Maps 9.19.1, along with leaving all google services protected, the app continued to function with the screen off for a > 10 minute drive, something that it hasn't done to-date.

I thought I would leave this here as a possible solution for anyone else that has this problem - not sure if it's permanent, but it's working for now, which I'm happy about.

Thats very good news. I hope it continues to be no problem. I wonder if it was the update, or the protected gservices, or a combination, or in spite of it all.
