Hi

Credits
@"mirandam"
for the following

Before doing anything to your phone:
1. Read the forum
2. Search and read the forum
3. Get the correct setup for connecting your phone to your pc by....: reading the forum and getting it right
4. Make a complete backup of your phone by... yes: reading the forum and getting it right
5. Check your backup is working
6. Make sure you have another stock rom of your phone, apart from your backup, and make sure it is the right one
7. Read the forum again (get the idea?) to make sure you know what's at stake before trying to flash anything at all
8. Make another backup of your phone and try to flash that backup to make sure you understand everything to get your phone working again in case of failure in the process.
9. Make a backup of all your working backups on dvd or another media not actively connected to your pc, you'll be amazed at how many people lose their backup just because of a power-outage.
10. Now go ahead and try that great custom rom you've seen, and be sure to post your experiences on this great forum and give reputation to those that helped you, and donate a beer if you feel like it

################################
Can I also add to the wise words by mirandam that for some trying to root their phone.

search for the actual error message you are seeing please.

time wasters often start posting and refuse to mention that they know they have an error and the contents of the error message.

Do not make this mistake please.

post the actual contents of the error message or attach a decent photo of it please.

################
They may need to read the rooting forum,
they may need to install a custom recovery to "update" chainfire's zip file,
---so CWM forum may come into play
OR the Tutorials forum may come into play.
they may need to flash that custom recovery using flashtools
--so MTK general tools may come into play
they may need to read Linux corner if they use Linux and can't use Windows

Which is a long way of saying exactly what she said which is to read the forums.

We were all new once, but nothing gets up my goat more than a hijack of a post.
Thread hijacking is the act of taking a forum discussion thread wildly off topic by discussing a subject entirely unrelated to the subject at hand. Modest hijacking is known as OFF TOPIC and is also discouraged in the main forums.Let me give example of hijacking.

I have an Iocean X7 HD....pretend I post
Quote:I am having trouble with the proximity sensor in taking calls

and you reply

Quote:I am having trouble with my iocean and my screen is freezing every 10 minutes

Its a hijack.
############
Regular members who kind of know each other may tease one another from time to time.....but thats humour and has a different effect from hijacking
###############

It gets ugly when a new poster asks a question and a second and third member ask slighly different questions to OP.

Moderators please consider .......
split off such replies......as some posters are using
google translate and will struggle with replies that might appear to be an answer to their question.

this can be prevented by not hijacking

cheers

###########
trivia

Also we get new members here who actually use google search and find a link to our forum and a particular post.

If hijacking is tolerated, it damages CPA reputation.

I am guilty of hijacking some posts myself so don't claim to be an angel.

Maybe it would also be a good idea to point new users to the search function inside the forum.
Many questions are asked over and over again because new users don't seem to take the trouble of searching for a similar question just because it takes some more time.
A good example being this:

aus9 Wrote:I have an Iocean X7 HD....pretend I post
Quote:
I am having trouble with the proximity sensor in taking calls

and you reply
I have the same phone but my imei is nowhere to be found and I can't make calls, what can I do?

that would not only constitute hijacking but also redundancy as that question has already been answered many times and can easily be found just by a simple search.
It really amazes me now many people use google but don't seem to bother using a sites own searching engine, even though some sites do no permit google to index their pages.

Although maybe a little off-topic (OT) regarding the original post (OP) (sorry @aus9 ) maybe it would also be a good idea to add these suggestions to new users:

3. get the correct setup for connecting your phone to your pc by....: reading the forum and getting it right

9. make a backup of all your working backups on dvd or another media not actively connected to your pc, you'll be amazed at how many people lose their backup just because of a power-outage.
10. Now go ahead and try that great custom rom you've seen, and be sure to post your experiences on this great forum and give reputation to those that helped you, and donate a beer if you feel like it Smiling

mirandam is my top post OK or would you like it modded?

can you put in a code box the syntax for showing @user please?

I have failed this with a green @ and a blue link when you are a donator and should be acknowledges as such.

Only thing I can tell you about the syntax is that anything following the @username (without a space inbetween) will invalidate the automatic link to that user as it is considered part of the username.
About the color, don't know but seems related to whether the user actually exists and is online or not. Maybe some mod can clarify this?

Nope, color is not dependent on the online status. As I look at it seems to be related to whether or not you're a contributor (lightblue), donator (green), mod (orange/red) or junior member (brown), just like the colors used throughout the forum.

another thing that happens is new members.....and dare i say existing members tend to click on the quote box....without thinking of the effects.

this box is second from the lower right

2) this often leads to members having to scroll thru lots of useless junk that have already read. Its really annoying on a mobile device.

If someone asks you a specific question or you want to quote one or more sentences of a large post........please consider doing a specific quote.

###########
How to do a specific quote?
#############
Method one
#########

Code:
[quote]the bit you want to reply to[/quote]

that is right.....you manually type quote and /quote with [ ] enclosing them

Method 2
########

for a right handed mouse user,
click where you want to insert a quote box
---->quote in box appears
copy and paste from above...... some text
click on the quote box again
------> quote end box appears

cheers

And I would add to those:

Method 3
########
Use the reply button to make a quote of the original post you want to use a part of.
You now have your new post ready to edit like this
Code:
[quote='mirandam' pid='33539' dateline='1413138883']
Thank you for the update, always good to hear the wife's happy :tu:
Please take a second of your time to give rep's to the post that helped you get your problem solved and of course set the thread as solved in the pulldown menu.
[/quote]
Next put ... three dots just behind the first line and ... three dots in front of the last line, like this
Code:
[quote='mirandam' pid='33539' dateline='1413138883']...
Thank you for the update, always good to hear the wife's happy :tu:
Please take a second of your time to give rep's to the post that helped you get your problem solved and of course set the thread as solved in the pulldown menu.
...[/quote]
this indicates the text you will be deleting from the quote before and after what is relevant to leave there, resulting in your quote like this:
Code:
[quote='mirandam' pid='33539' dateline='1413138883']...
Please take a second of your time to give rep's
....[/quote]

Which after posting will look like this:
(2014-10-13, 02:34)mirandam Wrote: ...
Please take a second of your time to give rep's
....

Due to the fact that you left the username and pid within the quote, the user who reads the partial quote will always be able to jump to the original post using the green arrow right behind "username" Wrote:
