iPhone 7 Plus dual rear cameras. Samsung drops the ball big time.

iPhone 7 Plus dual rear cameras. Samsung drops the ball big time.

As expected, the iPhone 7 Plus will carry a rear dual-camera setup. There are several ways a dual-camera setup can be implemented, but with the iPhone 7 they’ve come up with something a bit ingenius and likely quite useful to many.

Agree 100%.

Samsung, it would seem, spent their R&D on fixing some questionable decisions on the S6, and ignoring the rest. Like, for example, adding sd card support, removing the watch battery of the S6 and upgrading it to 3000mah on the S7. Still non-replaceable of course. How unfortunate.

As for software. Apple has IOS. Samsung has Android. Why they feel the need for all the bloatware and touchwiz interface mods is beyond me. Are they afraid of Google, their main (and essentially free) OS supplier? Talk about a huge advantage. They only have to tweak a complete software product, Apple must develop it all from scratch. Wouldn't that mean more money for hardware development??

Smaller bezels, compared to many other devices, is nice, but it doesn't offset a great camera in my book. On that note, it seems when they were messing with R&D, they didn't bother taking out the camera hump on the back. So... more annoying and increased chance of messing up the external lense, but less capable? Oh, they stuck with the same 5MP front camera, so no improvement attempts there.

It is as if they do not understand that cell phones now have FIVE main functions and selling points that can replace two full size devices (computer and camera). Wireless internet access. Phone calls. Software computing (apps/OS). Messaging. Digital Camera.

So to Samsung, I would say: Sure, waterproofing is nice, I guess. Also, thanks for the SD card slot expansion back. Not really sure why you took it away, but whatever. Anyways, I gotta ask, why did you cheap out on the camera?

In conclusion, Samsung had better be careful at this point. There are a lot of positives. I like small bezels. I like SD card expansion. I like longer runtime from bigger batteries. I like wireless charging. I LOVE curved screens and Android OS, but I also really really like great cameras... and so do a lot of other people.

I appreciate your reply here Ed. I find it incredible they didn't jump on the rear dual camera train.

Interfaces / modifying of AOSP Android is a marketing method to differentiate themselves. These OS and bloat apps also often bring users into their ecosystem with their own app stores, cloud storage, calendar apps etc... This type of software is huge business if they can pull users to it. It keeps them tied to their system, or at the very least their apps. Asus and Samsung are some of the "worst" when it comes to this.

I agree with you completely though; Google has some of the smartest brains on the planet working hard to perfect an OS and many brands feel the need to add their stamp to it...sometimes with not so hot results. It can be frustrating.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth
