The newer Mediatek phones I think can do this also, but this type of actions are for sure working with Qualcomm and Intel.
The Zenfone 2 can be tricky to enter fastboot. I have revised it. Please look again.
I wouldn't worry about any brick. This for sure will not brick you. You're not touching system. Just the userdata.

It's not difficult. Just press power and volume up until you feel a vibrate, then release power, but continue holding volume up for about 10 seconds and you should then be in fastboot.
I don't think Asus PC tools supports factory reset.
Do you know if USB debugging is enabled on your phone? Then you may be able to use Android SDK to see your phones display on PC.

If you happened to install Device Manager and enable it, you can wipe it remotely from any web browser. (Though I'm sure if you had, you'd have already done it. Just sayin', just in case you're overlooking the obvious.)

Yes. If you have device manager on, this is another way to do it. Some phones have it on by default too.
