mail-450 mp
#11
(2014-11-11, 10:34)los33 Wrote: MP stands for multi processing to be exact.

Now you must only be knowledgable of normal computer operations & mediatek devices.

The samsung galaxy s3 used the mali 400 MP as its gpu not just mediatek devices.

Also MP4 means it ONLY has 4 cores.
Now in mobile phones the gpu shares the cpu cores and does not have its on cores to work with nor does it use a dedicated FSB to transfer its bandwidth to produce image pixels.

The gpu is alloted an amount of ram by android of which it may use to share data over the available cores allowing more resolution to be possible without causing cpu spikes lowering frames per second and/or pixels per square.

In the mp4 version 480p was made default because when 720p was forced it would cause the available cores to spike causing a very slow image for videos, but with the newer chipsets that can handle much more because of cores now being able to transfer all processes much faster.

In turn allowing 720/1080p.

So all in all the screen size matters more on how fast the available cores to transfer its processes.

On a side note the mali 450 MP has a minimum of 1 core or as many as its limited tested 16 cores which is only used on desktop or laptop based mali 450 mp chipsets.

1. Dude, you need to do some research about basic terms such as bandwidth. Bandwidth cannot be transferred because it refers to the capacity of the data transfer line (the connection transferring data from point A to Point B)

I didn't want to give any analogies but you forced my hand so here goes...

Let's take the example of a water supply pipe. If the pipe can transfer a maximum of 10 cubic feet of water per second, then the 'bandwidth' for the pipe is 10 cubic feet per second -or- '10 CFps'.

Now... coming back to data. Data is measured in bits. So, if a data line can transfer a maximum of 5 billion bits per second, then the BANDWIDTH of that line is 5Gbps or 5 gigabits per second.

2. Why do you say that I only know about 'normal' computer operations & Mediatek devices? Isn't a mobile phone just like a small computer?

3. . i never said only mediatek uses Mali GPUs.

4. The Mali 450MP4 is a DEDICATED GPU - that means that it has its own cores. The only thing it doesn't have is dedicated VRAM (Video RAM) - it uses the phone's RAM to store data it is working with.

Proof: Mali 450MP4 has 4 cores clocked at 700MHz each. If it used the main CPU for processing graphics, wouldn't the GPU cores be said to be clocked at 1.7 GHz? The MTK6592 processor cores are clocked at 1.7GHz.

Also, how can a GPU using the CPU cores not cause the processor to spike?? Isn't it basically making the processor to do all the graphics processing?

5. Do the math... If the Mali 450MP4 didn't have its own cores, then it wouldn't be mentioned as the D.E.D.I.C.A.T.E.D GPU in the MTK6592 chipset. Why mention something that doesn't exist?

6. 480P was not made default in Mali 450MP4, WTF?! Even the much older MTK6589 had full HD (1920 x 1080) support. There are phones with FHD screens that use the MTK6589 chipset.

7. I don't understand what you meant when you said "...cores now being able to transfer all processes much faster." Do you care to elaborate?

8. Could you post a link of where you saw that Mali 450MP has a minimum of 1 core and a maximum of 16? I'd really like to verify that myself.

I'm glad to hear that. Such discussions can help you learn a lot about everything.

I do not have to detail anything specific for you.

If you have any questions towards what i said look into the source code provided on the mali developer website.

The documentation and code provided will help you understand.

Thanks again @gerstavros for providing the link. It looks like the problem was on my side - not the link itself.

I have read everything on the MediaTek site about Mali 450 and what it does is confirm what I have been saying all along - that the Mali 450 IS a dedicated GPU. It has between 1 and 8 cores (not 1-16 like @los33 had said). I really don't think there is anything I can add at this point. Nice discussion, though.
