No, I've updated trough recovery.
Because flash tools never recognized my phone! So, I made root, flashed cwm recovery with mobileuncle tools and then flashed update.zip after made a backup. Now I always do it by this way.

Do I need special tools for CWM recovery? My Thl T5s is rooted and I have mobile uncle tools. Stock recovery is in chinese...
Do I just need generic 6852 drivers or specific to the THL model? MY PC already has the phone drivers (I flashed to newer stock rom once already)

If you have the recovery image you can flash it directly with mobileuncle tools. Just place the file in your sdcard root.

I think we don't all know, because that version isn't released yet to download, so we (I personally) can't try anything to compare.
About the recovery, I've flashed the specific one found in this forum, so I think you need to do the same..

i think there is a misconception here regarding OTA,
OTA means over the air, so no manual steps involved.
every time a new FW comes out the producer will push it out and your phone will check periodically if there is an update.
if there is, it should ask you if you want to install (thats the way it works pretty much on all eg. Samsung phones)
OTA has nothing to do with manually downloading FW, installing CWM or rooting your phone, actually rooting or altering your original firmware in any way usually breaks OTA

Right!
OTA is the function embedded directly into phone software and you can find it in settings menu as "software update" or "check software update"...
So You can update directly online with one-click.
But our v3 doesn't support This function... Yet...
Via CWM is just another method for manual update/flash
