great advice, edcoolio! Thanks for sharing that.

I just did an auto upgrade with the Lenovo. I may try your method with an older laptop.
The problem I had was with setting the conservation mode of the laptop (dumb non-removable battery Doh ). I couldn't find the right settings on windows 10 to disable/enable it without the lenovo power management app, so I had to restore a previous version. Turned out okay, though. Still seeing a few bugs, here and there, but overall, it's fine. Smiling
I wanted to make sure and follow up on this with the following:

The upgrade process must be completed on your current install. Once complete, that drive should be removed and set aside.

Check your settings that Windows 10 has activated. If it has not, stop immediately and either wait for Microsoft's servers to activate or rollback to your previous version.

Using Magic Bean does not always work on all Windows editions!!! As such, the clean install may not activate as the key will be a generic one.

------------------

The way this is SUPPOSED to work (according to Microsoft) is as follows:

Upgrade your current Windows.

Check for activation

Download ISO tool for USB or DVD for your version

Reboot to USB (please use another hard drive for this from here on out, but Microsoft says you don't have to)

Perform your clean install

Microsoft magically connects you to the Internet and activates your software.

The last step above is the scary one and one that I have yet to see successful on a regular basis. This is why you MUST NOT use your working boot drive for clean installs!!!

If you have your previous Windows Media, you can also reinstall that OS, use the upgrade option on the tool, activate, then "reset" Windows, keeping nothing. This is also a clean install. After a month, you can use the hard drive clean up tool in Windows to kill the files from your previous version. Good luck!

advantages it brings?

Windows 10 main advantage is that the license will be valid "forever" and the security patches/anti-virus will be updated "forever", with no extra products to purchase for the OS. Like Linux, but with some more privacy issues I suppose.

It will also run nicely on older equipment thanks to some of the cheaper (and quite slow) SOC from Intel as part of the Microsoft target minimum spec.
