'Mind the gap' between atomically thin materials

For the first time, researchers have grown a single atomic layer of tungsten diselenide on a one- atom-thick substrate of graphene with pristine interfaces between the two layers using an industrially scalable technique.

This is really interesting stuff. There is virtually no limit to the kind of 'synthetic' materials they can make by applying different elements one layer at a time. I particularly like how strong a single layer of graphene can be. I wonder how strong several layers of the stuff can be. Maybe we might be looking at 0.1 mm-thin shatter-proof glasses for our smart phones or bullet proof glass thinner than a human hair. Who knows what the future holds for this new technological frontier.
