[iNew V3 Mod] Make your internal system storage 6GB
#61
I will try to reformat it to stock 1GB and put all apps on external sd. I don't want 6GB mod, because it's probably done the same way as 3.5GB one, and I would have at least 2GB wasted space on that partition. But I see now it's getting worse. I had to take out the battery because it wouldn't boot up to the homescreen! I was already slowly preparing SP Flash Tools Smiling But now everything's normal again, or at least I hope it is. All these problems just 15 minutes before I was about to make a backup and call it a day. And I wasted at least 4 hours on this damned thing.

Never ending problems. After flashing stock 1GB EBR, I restored my backup, and this is what I get after first bootup:

Encryption unsuccessful
Encryption was interrupted and can't complete. As a result, the data on your phone is no longer accessible.

The only given choice was factory reset, so now I not only have the stock partitions, but stock rom too Sad
I never used any encryption, so I really don't know what happend here?

Now I'm restoring for the second time, maybe it will understand this time what I want to do...

EDIT:
ok, finaly some good news. The only thing that I see in connection to encryption (and security) is ".android_secure" folder on my external sd card, where all my apps reside (those which were moved from data partition, because I had to move away everything above 1GB, so CWM will not try to restore 2GB of apps onto 1GB data partition). So I just deleted .android_secure folder on my external sd card (because I have it in CWM backup anyway), and repeated the restore process once again. Now everything's in place like it should be: 13+1GB partitions, alls apps and settings intact.

Storage partition is ok for now, and since I have only 50-100MB free on my data partition, all new apps should automaticaly be moved to my external sd card and not corrupting my phone storage. At least that's the theory. Now apps are loading slower (especialy their icons upon bootup) than from internal memory (V3 has a really fast nand chip), but if that's the price I must pay, I guess I'll have to live with it. Hope I won't be visiting this thread anytime soon Smiling Fingers crossed...

I do not think you will have to live with this, because there are a lot of users with 3,5gb data partition or 6gb data partition (like me) with no problem.
If I was you I will try to flash with sp flash tools everything and restore your apps through titanium back up. In this case you will lose some settings etc but it will be more clear installation than restoring through recovery.

But there are not many users with 50-100MB left on the data partition like in my case. Or with 250+ apps like me (don't ask me why I have so much). I didn't have any issues until I reached very low free space on my data partition. Then both phone storage partition and later even data partition became corrupted. So until you fill up all your free space (good luck on 6GB partition lol), you just can't say there's no problem if we don't have the same test scenario.

Yeah, it could be due to some weird setting, but now when everything is restored back on 1GB partition, and if I don't experience the same issue, then it can't be some system setting or some misconfiguration. It's still early to judge, but so far so good.

Ok, but why don't you use the 6gb size for your data? You said before:

Quote:I don't want 6GB mod, because it's probably done the same way as 3.5GB one, and I would have at least 2GB wasted space on that partition.

Do you use the rest of your internal memory and you need that 2gb?
It would be better less space than slow apps.

I like the way you make your priorities, but it's the first part of my quote that worries me. I just don't trust it anymore. If it works for you and everyone else, that's super cool, but I'll stay on the safe side until something else doesn't come out (new rom, new partition logic, etc). I doubt very much there's some misterious system setting/configuration that is corrupting phone partitions, so now I can only blame the mod. Might be some special case and/or is specific to the way I set up everything, but it really is happening and it's not harmless. And regarding external sd card speed, it's not much difference when loading apps. Just when saving them (which is one time only process anyway), and reloading app icons after switching back from USB Mass Storage Mode. I can live with that.
If I helped you, clicking "Thank You" button will be enough.

Highly illogical to think it's the mod just because you don't know what else it could be. If thousands of people are using it without any issue at all, including hundreds of people with the same phone as you, it's far more likely it's NOT the mod that's the problem.

Nandroid restores are well known to cause issues. Especially when something about the firmware has changed.

Well... illogical or not, the partition layout is now set to 1GB, and everything is going smooth. I've been installing and reinstalling dozens of apps, and my partitions are still ok. The only changes I made to my system were installing CWM, rooting it, and this partition mod. I didn't do any nandroid restore before the problem became evident. I'm still running the same set of apps (and even more as I said earlier), so if it's not the mod to blame, than I only see root and CWM as culprits, which are very unlikely. Yes, I know many users are using the mod, either through a separate flash or together with the rom, but as I already said, not many of them squeezed the last free byte on their data partition, so the test case is not the same. I also didn't have any problems when I had plenty of free space, so fill it up to the cap and see how things going. Or not going.

Any active storage space will start to cause stability issues with the system if you squeeze it to maximum. There needs to be space for some give and play. Have you tried squeezing the 1GB to maximum?

Stability issues - ok, it goes with the every other operating system too, but corrupting the partition and making all of my data invalid - simply not acceptable. I've come to around 50MB free on 1GB data partition (that's about max which the system will let you), and all was well - both system stability and data partition integrity. These last cca. 50MB are there as a fail-safe, so that by itself should maintain system stability, so the user himself don't need to constantly worrying about whether the system would crash if he forgets about it.
