I loaded this scatter file in SP Flash Tool 5.1352.01 (as administrator), went on the READ BACK tab and created a ROM_0 file by selecting the following values:

- Start Address: 0x0 - the start address of PRELOADER
- Length: 0x52800000 - the start address of CACHE

I turned off the phone, engaged the read back command and connected the phone to the PC, and the read back process started and completed OK. The resulting ROM_0 file size is 1.28 GB.

I turned on the phone, launched MTK Droid Tools 2.5.3 as administrator, the device was identified with blue status color (unrooted), selected "To process ROM_ from Flash Tool" and loaded the ROM_0 file.
The task completed with the following results:

Notice: preloader.bin is missing

As far as i know the preloader.bin is required by SP Flash Tool to enable the phone's download mode.

I launched SP Flash Tool 5.1352.01 as administrator, loaded "MT6592_Android_scatter.txt" file from "X2_Soul_140915_ForFlashtoolFromReadBack_150122-213353" folder, went to DOWNLOAD tab, checked RECOVERY only and selected the path to "X2_Soul_140915__recovery_150122-213353.img".
I turned off the phone, engaged the DOWNLOAD command in DOWNLOAD ONLY mode, connected the phone to PC and the task completed OK.

I loaded the phone in CWM recovery mode, launched MTK Droid Tools 2.5.3 as administrator and the device was detected with cyan-blue color status (unrooted).
In "root, backup, recovery" tab i engaged the "Backup" command, the task started and completed with the following results:

22/01/15 22:46:35  --- copying is complete  ---

The task started and finished with the "copying is complete" message.

The resulting "!Files_to_FlashTool" folder contains the following files:
- boot.img
- EBR1
- EBR2
- lk.bin
- logo.bin
- MBR
- MT6592_Android_scatter.txt
- preloader.bin
- recovery.img
- secro.img

Notice: system.img is missing

When i launched SP Flash Tool 5.1352.01 as administrator and loaded the "MT6592_Android_scatter.txt" file from "!Files_to_FlashTool" folder, the checkmarks and paths are ok for all files, except for "ANDROID" due to the missing system.img file.
I noticed that when the phone is connected to the PC in adb mode, there are two partitions mounted in Windows Explorer, one as a virtual CD-ROM, and another as a simple drive, but the last one is inaccessible, because file transfer mode and multimedia mode are not enabled, as it should be, in usb debugging mode.

Question: Is it possible that the backup task performed by MTK Droid Tools in recovery mode is failing because of the mounted drive in Windows, and as a result it is not able to access the internal storage of the phone to create the "Clockworkmod\backup" folder?

I am open to any suggestions in order to solve the problems described above.

I would also like to point the fact that when i tried the SP Flash Tool 5.1452.00 version in conjunction with MTK Droid Tools 2.5.3 i encountered the following problem:
- SP Flash Tool 5.1452.00 (administrator mode) READ BACK task completed OK.
- MTK Droid Tools 2.5.3 (administrator mode) processed the ROM_0 from Frash Tool and generated boot_patch.img and CWM recovery.img successfully, but preloader.bin still missing.
- SP Flash Tool 5.1452.00 (administrator mode) DOWNLOAD command, in DOWNLOAD ONLY mode, FAILED TO FLASH the CWM recovery.img and issued the "PMT HAS CHANGED FOR THE ROM. IT MUST BE DOWNLOADED" error message.

Question: Is it possible to solve the "PMT has changed for the ROM. It must be downloaded" error by editing the scatter file to delete the sections referring to CACHE and USRDATA, because these are not included in the ROM_0 file generated on read back?

Thank you in advance for your patience and goodwill!

Just a tip for anybody coming into this thread with a Cubot X9 - you need to hold down the volume up button when connecting the phone with power off to get readback to start.

Thanks so much for this! I was able to get CWM installed, and then root, on my Cubot X9 (none of the simple rooting apps worked). I somehow screwed up flashing my recovery the first time (I think it was a driver issue), and the X9 doesn't have a removable battery so I had to wait for the battery to die before I could try again. Oh, and the CWM created by this method doesn't seem to be able to mount the internal SD card on my Cubot X9, but it *could* mount my external SD card, so I was able to just use that to copy over SuperSU. Once I was rooted, I was able to get TWRP installed and it was smoooooth sailing. Smiling The only thing is, I somehow wiped my IMEI settings and didn't have an NVRAM backup. Going to try the MTK Droid Toolkit method when I get home, as Mobile Uncle doesn't work.

Thank you so much! You were literally the only one who clearly explained step 12:
"This is where you'll need the address from #6. End address will be the begin address of Cache..."

It was unclear to me that I had to fill in the end address as begin address.
