Found a hidden gem (Coolpad 7320)
#1
Two weeks ago, out of curiousity I order coolpad 7320. My main consideration is price, it could be found around $140. It's an octacore device priced in mtk6582 range. Yesterday, I finally got it in my hand.

To be honest, initially I didn't particulary have high expectation with this phone. Well, it's very cheap and could be considered one of the cheapest octacore around.

I'll start with specs:
WCDMA 900/2100
5.5" hd with ips & ogs screen
Mt6592 @1.7Ghz
1 gb ram/8gb rom
13 mp rear camera with autofocus and flash + 2mp front
2500mah replaceable battery
Wifi/bluetooth/OTG

I bought it @139.99 with free shipping, arrived after 18 days shipping with singpost with 13 usd tax.

At first I am shocked, I could not find the battery in the box. The phone is very light for a 5.5" phone, so I think the battery is not inside the phone. But I was wrong, it was there sealed with a yellow transparant tape.

The phone is small for a 5.5" device, only around 3mm longer than xiaomi mi3 with 5" screen and about in same weight. For a $140, coolpad 7320 is a well build phone. It has 100% plastic body with chromed line. The body is solid, no creaking sound like doogee dagger in the back cover. The one I recieved is dark grey with brushed titanium pattern back cover. It was very shiny but finger prints is less noticeable, maybe because it came with darker color. Overall build quality is on par with xiaomi note. But I could assure you that this phone is way lighter thinner, and smaller than xiaomi note. The bezel is slim so most of the front side is dominated with the lcd.

The back cover:

You could google around for more pic ;)

After I removed the tape covering contact area in the battery I turn on the phone. The first thing I found is a nice screen, bright with no shading near the edge which I sometimes found in cheaper phone. Then it plays boot tune, which is LOUD but with significant noise. After it boots I found volume is 2 step below maximum, after I step it down a bit the noise in the speaker is less noticeable but I think it still there. Coolpad is forcing too much with its external speaker.

The first thing I do when unboxing a new model is testing the camera. Suprisingly this phone has good camera, it takes great picture even in low light condition. Almost as good as xiaomi redmi 1s at night with more detail, but when you zoom it there is some noise. Overall this phone has better camera than doogee dagger. The camera app itself has minimal feature, but this could be fixed by installing 3rd party camera app. It could record 1080 videos with selectable format, I haven't play too much with it.

I will compared it with Coolpad f1 which I will recive today especially with the camera. Coolpad has sony IMX135 exmore rs sensor, so I was curious with how the difference between the two device.

I will update this post when I have more time, hope this helps.

Ps: I know this phone did not has gorilla glass which for some is crucial, but for those who did not need it I could assure you the phone is worth every penny!

I also bought a Coolpad 7320 and have had it for a week now. Yes, the phone is light and very sleek. I had a Neken N6 before and the CP is much lighter and does not feel much bigger in my hands even though it has 0.5" bigger lcd! A downside with the feel of the CP is that it feels very slippery in the hands.

Bad:

- Proximity sensor bug (doesent dim lcd during calls if not calibrated after each restart).
- Stock firmware has some bloat ware
- Extremely short USB cable included
- 1gb of RAM

Good:

- Very good price/performance ratio (octacore, 900mhz 3g, 5.5" 1280x720 display)
- Good build quality and no light bleed.
- Nice response and no ghost touches
- Nice camera quality

I run a custom ROM based on the CoolUI 5.5 wich I found on a russion forum (please dont ask for links, just google). Its in english or chinese and had bloatware but after some cleanup its great. TWRP rooted it for me automaticly right after flash. Its a beautiful smooth ROM with Viper4audio FX included wich tweaks the sound anyway you want it.

I would say that this Coolpad 7320 is one of the best cheap octacores you can buy these days!

I have play around with coolpad f1, not much different with the camera. Coolpad f1 is a bit heavier, has metal frame around the screen and thicker plastic material. Overall, compared to several phone I found coolpad f1 is one of the best in terms of build quality, even better than non chinese android like samsung, htc, motorola, etc. For $30 usd, I choose coolpad f1 over 7320 which is more to my liking in terms of screen size. But many didn't find 5" screen is enough, and for some on budget $30 is a go or no go.

Coolpad f1 in my possesion:

For proximity sensor issues, i think there is a fix so you did not need to calibrate for every boot. Try googling "fix proximity sensor xda," if my memory did not failed me it should be available in mobileuncle mtk tools in mtk engineering mode. Sorry could not confirm this, I currently using a phone with snapdragon cpu.

If you have root, bloatwares are easily removed.

I also have thl t11 and kingsing k1s(140usd with discount code) on shipping and should be in my hand next week.

widh61, you do not have the proximity bug on your 7320? I have tried to calibrate the proximity sensor with mobile uncle without success. It just says "calibration failed".

No, maybe rom related. The phone seems to came with custom rom, did you have root when calibrating?

The permanent fix is to change sensitivity parameter, if you only calibrating it will need to recalibrate on every boot. There is a script added to init.d but this is just a fix not a permanent solution:

#!/system/bin/sh
echo 900 > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/als_ps/psthd

Add those two line to your init.d, the phone will recalibrate in every boot. I forgot where I found information to change the parameter, it was for another model but it should work for any mtk devices.

Thanks for your reply! I tried this script but it does not work. I get a message when running the script like "no such file or directory". [/u][/php]

Until a more permanent fix for the proximity sensor is available, I use tasker to automaticly perform calibration after boot.

Have to give props. That is a brilliant hack I'd never have even considered.
