Why did Elephone make a last minute decision to not ship the phone with Lollipop after they had told everyone that the phone would come with Lollipop? Were they unable to make a working Android 5 in time? Will they (sometime next year) make Lollipop available for the p6000?

Lollipop ROM's will be available as soon as MTK will make it compatible with the processors.
So, Elephone and the others will have to wait fot MTK, them they will go for Lollipop.
It's in MediaTek hands... not Elephone.

That is fantastic news - I'm sure MediaTek is working round the clock to give the Lollipop to the eagerly waiting China phone makers. I'd really like to have a taste of Lollipop but I don't want to have to buy an expensive brand name phone to get it.

Agreed.

However, I'm not sure that I would want to be the unofficial beta-tester for a new MediaTek kernel or base code. Maybe after a few months of smooth sailing... at least with my own money.

Personally, I'm running a 5.0 CM12 build for a Samsung Galaxy S3 - still messing with it, but not a huge deal so far IMHO.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the initial reviews on some China branded phones!

Seriously, this is the last thing to worry about when buying a phone. As @edcoolio mentions, its not a big deal.

Is there some specific feature lollipop has that you're interested in?

I read through the list and there's nothing interesting there. Even less interesting than what KK offers over JB. Much ado about nothing IMO.

The takeaway here is this: with Lollipop, Google was more concerned with under-the-hood improvements and I'm sure Lollipop will be quite a bit better than KK in terms of performance and battery life. Yes, it might not be as stable as time-tested KitKat in the beginning but everything will be fixed quickly as numerous people adopt the new OS.
