I'm fairly sure there's some slight understanding regarding the use of 'big names'. I think apple2005 took this as meaning Apple/Samsung/HTC. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Problems happen with all smart phones. Samsung and Apple included.
There aren't 'always' going to be problems, but it's more likely to happen with China brands. Even more so with cheap clones. There's a tradeoff for the cheap price we pay. It's QC and CS (quality control, customer support). Obviously if you buy some no-name brand dirt-cheap phone, it's more likely, but not a given that you'll have some issues. If you purchase a popular China brand, you're more likely to receive firmware updates and be able to purchase replacement parts.
China name-brands are also more likely to have better QC, because they have a name to protect, but it's surely no guarantee you'll get a perfect phone if you order a branded China phone. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find the manufacturer's sell lemons at an extremely discounted price and some of these lemons get passed on to shops who cater to international customers. This is why we always recommend going with a well known shop with a good reputation so you're covered.

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

Zoo
Thl
Lenovo (obviously)
Xiaomi (hongmi)
Oppo
Alcatel(can't remember its Chinese sister company)
Umi
Jiayu
These are the brands which I've found that can deliver highly reliable mediatek* based cheap phones

These are some of the decent brands. They're probably more reliable than the cheap clones....
Alcatel's sister company is TCL. I just wrote a preview on their rumored MTK6592 phone,
TCL Idol X+
